Down but Not Out!

By: Turn One Radio Host Melissa J

When I was touring Italy on my motorcycle my bike went down. There were a few things I remember vividly, as if they happened just days ago: Nate and motorcycle

1. Pushing the bike away while sliding (like we were trained to do to in order to reduce momentum).
2. Hearing the sound of my helmet grinding against the pavement.
3. Seeing a bus wheel passing by, only feet from my head before I slid off the road.

This is a sobering memory. I was very lucky I was not seriously injured, and also lucky that a group of Italian riders stopped only moments after my crash to help pick me, and the bike’s pieces, up. I couldn’t understand what they were saying, but having other riders standing by my side was the biggest comfort I could have asked for at that moment.

I now work at Hupy and Abraham Law Firm. We have an entire community of all types of riders in our offices, from investigators, to attorneys, to accounting and marketing. Spanning over the states of IL, IA, and WI, we offer not only expert legal services with over 40 years of experience representing bikers, but also the support and understanding of a fellow rider when you need it most. We are involved in helping people avoid a crash through our Watch for Motorcycles Campaign but when a crash occurs we also work with Accident Scene Management to reduce injuries and fatalities. Our expertise is put to work when injured riders ask is to help them navigate the process of recovery after a crash occurs. Can we help you or someone you know? It costs nothing to call and speak to one of our motorcycle case experts 800-800-5678.

Motorcycle Crash Technology

In the latest report released from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 4,668 motorcyclists were killed during 2013, a slight decrease from the previous year of 4,986 motorcycle deaths. Because there are more motorcyclists riding each year, this is a promising trend. Never too Good VideoFortunately not every motorcycle accident results in a fatality, but according to the accident lawyers at Sevenish Law Firm, the types of motorcycle accident injuries can range from severe abrasions to permanent impairments, affecting thousands of motorcyclists each year (NHTSA reports 84,000 injuries occurred in 2013).
While motorcyclists only make up 3% of roadway users, according to the Insurance Information Institute, they account for approximately 14% of all roadway fatalities and about 2% of all injuries sustained in accidents. In efforts to avoid a crash, motorcyclists should use motorcycle crash technology whenever possible. The use of such technology not only keeps motorcyclists safer, but other motorists also stay safer, decreasing the number of crash related injuries and fatalities.

Safety First, More Than a Helmet
Some riders believe that a helmet is a safety “must have” because it reduces the risk, and may even prevent brain injuries in the event of an accident. A motorcycle helmet on its own, however, will not prevent a crash from occurring.

2015 River Road Fundraiser
River Road Fundraiser

2015 River Road Fundraiser We found the perfect location! I’ve traveled all over the USA and several other countries but one of my favorite places in the world is located just 200 miles from home. There is something special about the Mississippi River are and the bluffs that surround it. Watching the barges drift along the river from high above with a gentle breeze and sun on my face, well, it makes me SMILE! Often, while planning an event that hosts over 100 people, I can hardly wait to reveal the wonderful places and people I have met and this year was one of my favorites.

2015 River Road Fundraiser Last year while out exploring the area, event participant Barbara Hayden told me she thought she had found a wonderful location for our event. As a skier, she had gone to Chestnut Mountain Ski Resort in Galena, IL to check it out. What she found was a facility that not only was able to host our entire group under one roof but they had all of the amenities that made our event wonderful from start to finish. Ann Skemp from Dubuque sketched out a proposed Poker Run Route with stops that are favorites of the local riders. The stops and our agenda took us through all 3 states, took us on beautiful winding back roads and along the Mississippi River for those who visited Poopy’s in Savannah. The warm welcome of our Poker Run hosts was a pleasure and the weather could not have been more cooperative.
